Web Jargon 101

Geek talk. It is something that we joke about, poke fun, and for some of us, speak. But for all others who do not know the language that comes with the web, I have created a list of the TOP 10 words and definitions that will help you along your way as you survive the internet.

code or coding:

“Coding” refers to the creation of websites, computer programs, and other application.
“Code” refers to the language programmers write that are typed instructions for the program(s). It is interpreted into a language that can be read and then executed.

e-commerce

It is doing business online. In a broad sense, e-commerce means doing business over interconnected networks. Certain software programs that run the main functions of an e-commerce website provide the capability to sell goods online.
Examples of e-commerce include accepting credit cards for online sales, generating online advertising revenue, and trading stock from an online brokerage.
E-commerce plays a major factor in the U.S. Economy because it not only assists companies to provide many different levels of transactions, but it also creates globally wide business opportunities.

Firewall

It is a security measure used by many companies to prevent hackers and other unauthorized users from accessing internal information. They are also set up to protect the security of the servers.
A personal firewall is software that can be installed that control what information and communication occurs. It can act as a great shield to filth and those trying to spy or steal information.
The term comes from firefighting where a firewall refers to a barrier that is established to prevent the spread of fire. It is definitely seen as the first line of defense.

FTP (File Transfer Protocol):

It is essential to know FTP when creating your own website. It is the standard method of downloading and uploading files over the Internet. With FTP, you can login to a server and transfer files.

Internet (a.k.a the Net):

The Internet, to many, is seen as the most important technological innovation of our generation. In simple terms, it is a network of networks. It is a system of linked computer networks that allow data to be transferred, mail to be sent electronically (e-mail), formation of newsgroups, and we know as the world wide web.
The Internet was orginially designed by the U.S. Department of Defense for two main reasons. First, it would provide the means that a communication signal could withstand nuclear war; and second, it could serve military institutions worldwide. It was first known as ARPANet.

Meta-:

It means “about” in computer science. Here are some examples:
Meta tag = describes the content of a web page
Metadata = data that describes other data
Meta knowledge = knowledge that describes other knowledge

Open source:

Generally speaking, it is any program whose source code users, developers, or hackers make available for use or modification. Historically, many software creators have not made their source code available for the general public. It is usually developed as a public collaboration and made available for free.

PPC (Pay-Per-Click; Cost-Per-Click):

It is a form of online advertising. It works as follows: You bid for certain keywords that describe your site and the products or services you offer. When a user searches for these keywords, they are brought to your listing. When someone clicks on your listing, you get paid!
Many within the Internet field promote the use of paper-per-click ads, because they are a great short-term investment that usually yields pretty well.

SEO (Search Engine Optimization):

SEO is constantly evolving due to improvements and changes in technology. It refers to the following process: selecting targeted keywords that reflect the content of a website, placing them within the website so the search engines will be able to detect them, and, if all goes well, the site coming near the top when searched through a search engine.

World Wide Web (a.k.a the web, www):

If you are reading this blog right now by logging onto the Internet, you are on the world wide web! It is most often referred to as “the web.”
It is a collection of pages on the Internt that can be read by a computer. It has the ability to interact with the computer. You need an Internet connection, a computer, a web browser, and a few specialized programs in order to access and view this online information.
